The Best Kept Secret of the Big East
Throughout the majority of the NCAAW season, we have seen incredible players showcase their abilities for all to see. From players like Aliyah Boston, Angel Reese, & Caitlin Clark, the landscape of NCAAW hoops has never been better. The burgeoning abilities & skill sets of these players continue to grow with each passing year, resulting in higher-quality play. The dominance of these athletes has accelerated to some of them producing All-American numbers as freshmen and Sophomores. No other player exemplifies this trend in NCAAW basketball more than the DePaul Blue Demon Sophomore forward Aneesah Morrow. Morrow, who may be unknown to some, has dominated the landscape of NCAAW hoops since her first collegiate game.
Numbers Don’t Lie
Morrow, who hails from Chicago, Illinois has been the pride of the DePaul program since her first collegiate game tallying 31 PTS & 9 REB last season. As a true freshman, Morrow averaged 21.9 PPG, 13.8 RPG, 2.7 SPG & 1.3 BPG on 51.9% FG shooting. In addition, she also tallied 27 double-doubles, which ranked 2nd in the nation last year (23 were consecutive). This season, Morrow has tallied 24 double-doubles through 29 games with 8 of those double-doubles consisting of 15 + rebound efforts. Additionally, Morrow is averaging 25.5 PPG, 12.1 RPG, & 2.7 SPG this season, leading the Big East in RPG and SPG. To top it off she broke DePaul’s single-game scoring record with a 45 PT effort against Northwestern on 12/10/2022. Morrow has been able to produce incredible numbers on a consistent basis due to her dominant low-post play style.
Morrows Brand of Play
Morrow’s exploits, including becoming the 4th player in NCAAW history to have a 30 PT, 10 REB game against the UConn Huskies last year is attributed to her dominant and versatile play style. At 6’1, Morrow can rebound effectively, which has led to DePaul’s Number 1 ranked scoring offense in the Big East. In addition, Morrow has the ability to effectively seal in the post and finish with either hand through contact. She runs the floor better than most guards and can hit 12-15 footers with efficiency.
Morrow’s game is comparable to another college standout, Duke’s own Elton Brand, who was the Number 1 pick in the 1999 NBA Draft. Brand was an extremely efficient and physical forward who could stretch the floor with his mid-range shooting ability. Much like Brand, Morrow has adopted this play style, making her difficult to guard for all opposing teams. With Morrow on a statistical trajectory like Elton Brand’s, inquiring parties are looking toward Morrow’s potential place as a WNBA Draft Pick and where she may land.
Morrow’s Next Steps
With the DePaul Blue Demons’ current record at 15-14 (with a Big East record of 8-10), their NCAA tournament hopes will hinge on their performance in the Big East tournament. Regardless of their finish, Aneesah Morrow will most certainly become a target for the WNBA. With her amazing production vaulting her towards the top of recent NCAAW lure, Morrow would be a sure-fire Top 3 pick in any draft. From former Number 1 picks such as Candace Parker & Aja Wilson, Morrow’s future play will guide her next steps toward the WNBA as a potential Number 1 pick.
