Detroit Mercy Guard, Antoine Davis
The Introduction of Antoine Davis
Throughout the entirety of this NCAAM season, we have seen a myriad of amazing upsets and individual performances. From the dominance of the Big 12, to the amazing play of teams like Purdue and Houston, college basketball has been amazing this year . With the elevated level of team competition, it can be easy to forget some of the lesser-known college players. Since the attention of NCAA hoops has always being focused on team success rather than individual exploits, change is needed. Luckily, the amazing individual play of Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis has started to garner national attention, and for good reason. From walking on at Detroit Mercy, Davis & his scoring ability, have made an impressive introduction to the college basketball world.
Natural Born Scorer
Antoine Davis, who is from from Bloomington, Indiana has become one of the most prolific scorers in the country. Davis is currently leading all NCAAM players in scoring average at a whopping 26.6 PPG. He has tallied 8, 30-plus point games & two back-to-back 40-plus point games this season. Davis’s scoring exploits aren’t a new occurrence, as the Detroit Mercy guard has a career average of 25.0 PPG. Davis’s rise to the top of the college basketball scoring ranks began with no Division 1 offers and having to walk on at Detroit Mercy. From his one to two dribble step backs, his quick first step, and his supreme 3-point shooting prowess ( 41.5%), Davis has been able to dominate opposing defenses for the past 5 years . Davis’s offensive ability combined with the coaching from Mike Davis, has made Davis one of the most explosive scorers in the history of NCAAM college basketball.
Chasing the Pistol
With Davis averaging 26.1 PPG through his first 4 years, he began to climb the NCAA’s Division 1 all-time scoring list. Earlier this season Davis reached the 3,000-point mark in a 26-point effort against Charlotte on November 23rd . During his 41-point game against RMU, Davis hit 11 3’s , becoming the all-time 3 PT leader in NCAAM history. Davis now sits at the Number 2 spot on the list, amassing 3,274 career points. By comparison, Davis sits behind the Pistol Pete Maravich, who scored an incredible 3,667 points during his time at LSU. With Davis trailing Maravich by 393 points, it is unlikely that he will surpass Maravich. However, Davis has been able to use his 6’1, 165 lb frame to become an elite three-level scorer, who will be a coveted player by several NBA teams in the forthcoming draft.
From Walking on to Walking Tall
Look for Davis, to continue his incredible scoring odyssey with 7 regular season games left on Detroit Mercy’s schedule. If he continues his scoring pace of 26.6 PPG, Davis will end his college career with 3460 total points scored. This feat would vault him towards the Mount Rushmore of Detroit Mercy legends and College basketball legends alike. From players like Ray McCallum Jr,. Rashad Phillips, & Dave DeBusschere, expect to see Antoine Davis continue to etch his name in the anals of Detroit Mercy’s storied history books, with each passing game.
